Health benefits of switching from smoking to vaping

Vaping is commonly said to be a healthier alternative to smoking, so this article will explore what benefits to health may be noticed if someone switches from smoking tobacco, to vaping e-liquid.

Experts agree that vaping is 99% safer than smoking. Tobacco smoke contains over 4000 harmful chemicals that are not found in e-liquid vapor, so it is easy to understand why vaping is a healthier alternative. But what health benefits can you expect to experience from making the switch? This article takes a closer look:

  •  The first noticeable benefit occurs within 8 hours, as oxygen levels in the blood will return to normal. This is because e-cig vapor does not contain the carbon monoxide found in tobacco smoke and after 8 hours blood levels will have halved.
  • After 24 hours, all carbon monoxide will have been eliminated from the body
and the lungs will start to clear out mucus and unwanted debris that has accumulated from tobacco smoke inhalation.
  • After 48 hours, sense of taste and smell improves, as the receptors in the nose and mouth that were damaged by tobacco smoke, repair themselves.
  • After 72 hours, people may notice that their breathing becomes easier.
This is because tar in tobacco smoke clogs and irritates bronchial tubes. Once cleared and relaxed breathing becomes easier, and energy levels should increase.
  • After 3-9 months lung function should improve as accumulated debris from tobacco smoke is cleared. Any smokers a cough, wheeze or shallow breathing should be improved.
  • After five years, the risk of heart attack is reduced to about half that of a smoker. These odds increase as times goes by. Studies show that e-cig vapor does not damage heart cells.
  • As e-cig vapor does not contain the carcinogens found in tobacco smoke, after ten years, the risk of lung cancer is half that of a nonsmoker. The risk of heart attack is now almost the same as someone who never smoked,  continued use of nicotine has about the same increased risk of heart attack as drinking coffee and tea does.

Obviously, the ideal situation is to inhale fresh air only. However, it is very clear indeed, that many smokers have lots of difficulties to alter their often lifelong habit. For such people, a harm reduction approach is obviously of great benefit to their health.

Is nicotine unhealthy?

A lot of people worry about the nicotine in e-liquid. Nicotine has got an awful press due to being associated with tobacco smoke. However, it is evident that it is not the nicotine in tobacco smoke that does the serious damage. In fact, there is plenty of evidence that nicotine has some health benefits in small doses and moderation. It is not a benign substance, it has a similar mild constricting effect on the circulatory system for example, like caffeine. However such effects are much less in.

It is not a benign substance, it has a similar mild constricting effect on the circulatory system for example, like caffeine. However such effects are much less in e-cig vapor than tobacco smoke, due to the absence of combustion and carbon monoxide.

Such results need to be looked at in perspective, as many things cause vasoconstriction to different degrees. People with circulatory, high blood pressure, heart problems or undergoing surgery are advised to avoid caffeine, nicotine, etc. Likewise, pregnant women are also advised to avoid such substances. Cigarette smoke leaves deposits of tar and gunk in vessels, but e-cig vapor does not, this has obvious benefits.

Are other ingredients in e-cigs unhealthy?

The other components in electronic cigarette vapor, are propylene glycol, glycerol and flavor concentrate. Propylene glycol is a well-researched substance; the FDA approves that for use in air sanitization products. It is also the primary ingredient in medical inhalers (such as for asthma) used to transport medication to the lungs safely.

Glycerol is one of the most benign organic liquids known to man. Flavor concentrate in e liquid are food grade standard and recent study done by DR K Farsalinos indicated that they are generally safe for living cells. More research is needed in this area to discover the effects of a wider variety of flavour concentrates, but it is already known that even with flavour concentrates added, inhaling ecig vapour, is much safer than inhaling tobacco smoke.

When compared to tobacco smoking, vaping is degrees of magnitude healthier. Millions of people that have switched to ecigs testify to this fact and considering the obvious difficulty people have in quitting smoking, a harm reduction technique is clearly very important at this time. Only 5% of people who try to quit smoking without intervention, succeed.

The success rate increases slightly to a claimed 15% if NRT products are used. This is still a dismally low success rate and  these figures only show results one year after a quit attempt. Many smokers return to smoking even after years of having abstained. Considering these statistics, it makes sense to actively encourage harm reduction methods such as vaping. As electronic cigarette users are protected from the majority of the damage caused by smoking, whilst still being able to satisfy their cravings and avoid smoking tobacco long term.
